The rest of the week was uneventful. On Wednesday when I was due at Mike’s, Andy hadn’t been at the gym. I hadn’t recognised any of the faces from the night before. I had also parked the SUV at a different spot, just to be safe. I had asked Mike if there were any nights to be avoided in the gym.
“You don’t need to be here any other time than the times we’re training.” Mike glared at me as he walked around me in the ring.
“What if I want to come and just train?” I asked.
“Don’t.”
“Is there a problem if I do?” I pressed. I stopped doing my shadow boxing as I watched him, waiting for an answer.
“Why you got such a hard on for Loveland? You got a girl here? No one at your college for you to stick it in?” he barked at me. “Did I tell you to stop?”
“I was here last night,” I told him as I resumed my routine sets.
Mike was suddenly in my face. A bony finger in my chest. “Don’t come here unless it’s for our scheduled training. I won’t tell you again.”
I didn’t tell him I’d met Buzzcut after that. Old bastard was extra vicious as it was, giving me a hard enough training session. If I’d had any sense, I would have asked him at the end of my hour. After I left him, I headed to the showers at the rec centre. I skipped the spa bath and just rinsed off the sweat before heading home. I didn’t see Vicky. I had another training session with Mike on Thursday afternoon. He was slightly mellower than the previous evening. Halfway through, Headphones appeared. He put his headphones in, sat on the floor and watched. It was very unsettling. I stopped halfway through and asked if it was necessary. Mike hadn’t liked the attention, less so when he saw who it was, but hadn’t said anything, merely turned his back on him and told me to ignore him and get on with it. Headphones had remained expressionless, but I knew he was enjoying my discomfort. Before I’d finished my hour, he had stood up and left.
‘Who is he?” I asked Mike.
“You don’t need to bother yourself with him,” Mike grumbled.
“He seems pretty bothered by me,” I muttered.
“Yeah, you piss him off?” Mike glared at me. “Why’d you piss him off?”
“I don’t know him to piss him off,” I answered calmly.
“Yeah, well, tread carefully, I can’t afford for him to be pissed off.” Mike climbed out of the ring.
Well that cleared that up, I thought sarcastically.
I saw Hope a few times in passing, always with Annie. I would give a wave or smile, and she would do the same. Annie watched carefully, never acknowledging me. Awkward. Hope had said she would tell her she was in my bed and Annie would laugh. Looked to me like Annie hadn’t found it funny. I also managed to avoid the rest of my household. Through sheer luck and determination, I had mastered never being in Connor’s presence some time ago.
